This book documents the results of 398 Experiments on 104 Chemicals from the U.S National Toxicology Program… Asbestos is one of these Carcinogenesis Studies.

Asbestos is well documented in several locations in this book. Lots of technical information here. The summary data, provided by the NTP (National Toxicology Program) includes Technical Reports on Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies that were approved by the Board of Scientific Counselors Peer Review panel. The levels of evidence from the studies are all shown and charted. The types of Asbestos used in the studies included: Amosite, Chrysotile, Tremolite and Crocidolite. The size of fibers tested varied from short to long. Short and long term asbestos exposure is discussed. The asbestos industrial applications noted in the charts include but are not limited to: Asbestos cement, textiles, insulation, asbestos cement pipe, acid resisting applications, ceramics and paint. The lab animals used to conduct the studies included rats, mice, hamsters and also some Human Surveillance after known exposure. Some of the information shows asbestos was a suspected human carcinogen as far back as the 1930s. Asbestos and cigarette smoking is also discussed and documented. The types of cancers associated with asbestos exposure are noted. Industrial risks, exposure limits, concentrations, prevention, test summary and conclusions, treatment for Cancers, and expert conversations are just some of the topics covered with respect to asbestos exposure. The book makes note of the manifestation of cancer long after exposure. The book says chances of a cure are still slight and prognosis is not very hopeful.

The book makes note that there is NO Threshold Values for Carcinogens. Long latency periods of several years to some decades renders the testing rather difficult.

Many well known experts participated in the publication of this book and are credited for their work in the “Index Of Contributors” list, toward the rear of the book.
